About Arabic Diacritics

Arabic diacritics (tashkeel/harokat) are small marks written above or below Arabic letters to indicate short vowels and pronunciation. They are commonly used in the Quran, children's books, and language-learning materials but omitted in everyday writing.

  • Fathah (فَ), Dhammah (فُ), Kasrah (فِ): Short vowel markers — removed.
  • Fathatain (فً), Dhammatain (فٌ), Kasratain (فٍ): Tanwin markers — removed.
  • Sukun (فْ): Marks absence of a vowel — removed.
  • Tasydid / Shadda (فّ): Indicates a doubled consonant — always preserved, as it changes the meaning of words.
